Have you ever thought about the total amount of water we waste on a daily basis or what would happen if we were to run out of this essential resource?
Unfortunately, we witness this nowadays in underdeveloped countries, where the situation has reached an alarming situation. People still lack access to clean water resulting in countless people dying of thirst or infections from dirty water. Some even say that the third World War will be waged because of quarrels over water access.
Luckily, technology has had other plans. As a matter of fact, the latest invention by QUARTZ enables us to drink UV purified water, wherever you are, by the mere click of a button.
Stylistically, the QUARTZ has a simple but classy look with dual textures on the exterior. The bottle tapers slightly toward the lid but keeps a wide opening for easy grip and cleaning. While the exterior looks like a classy stainless steel water bottle, QUARTZ’s lid contains an LED that emits UV-C light to purify the water. By pressing the button on the top of the lid, you activate the 280 nanometer UV-C light which QUARTZ claims neutralises 99.99% of bacteria and 99.99% of viruses in just 60 seconds using the high-powered ‘Adventure mode’.
Though it is common to demonise UV rays for their harmful effects on our skin cells. The companies’ researchers suggest otherwise. As a matter of fact, there’s a silver lining to using this spectrum of rays as the UV rays have the power to kill viruses, bacteria, and other bio-contaminants immediately.
The battery is estimated to last up to three months during regular use in self-cleaning mode. This means that the bottle can provide reliable water purification, even over long-distance travels, without the hassle of worrying about charging the battery.
While the UV-C light can kill viruses, bacteria, and other microscopic creatures, the QUARTZ does not actually contain any tangible filters, meaning it will not remove any unwanted items in the water or bugs for that matter. Once the dangerous or smelly contaminants are neutralised from the UV light, you can drink the water and the contaminants pass harmlessly through your body.
The feedback on the QUARTZ bottle was that it was exceptionally simple to use, with the only requirement being charging the rechargeable battery in the lid.
Though many don’t give a second thought about purchasing or throwing away an individual water bottle, the collective statistics should give all of us cause of concern. We use over 20,000 plastic water bottles every second! That works out to one million bottles per hour, and a staggering 480 billion bottles every single year.
While different types of plastic degrade at different rates, estimates show plastic bottles can last between 450 and 1,000 years! Many communities have taken steps to improve recycling efforts, but the fact remains that a very large portion of plastic bottles will end up in landfills where they will remain for centuries to come.
