Showing your dissatisfaction can make it possible for you to live longer, was the surprising conclusion of a German study at Jena University. As a matter of fact, German researchers have demonstrated that introverts are more affected by illnesses such as high blood pressure and cancer.
While some people keep calm in irritating situations, others make themselves heard as soon as the slightest inconvenience disturbs them. This study has suggested that this behavior could actually hold the key to longevity in life.
It has already been proven that health is highly dependent on mood, that is to say your behavior influences your health! Emotions are expressed through hormones that affect the body physiology and therefore, an anxious person will lower his immunity and increase the risk of becoming unwell.
In order to have a better health, physically and mentally, the group of German researchers have recommended that it is healthier to say whatever is on your mind!
By studying 6,775 patients, the German researchers analysed the evolution of some physiological parameters in a stressful situation, depending on the patient’s personality.
On one hand, the “repressors”, as Freud called them, those who keep their negative emotions to themselves, experiences high heart rates as they tended to hide their fear and become defensive. The studied parameters also revealed the possessed anxiety and desire to controll everything, including themselves. This situation promoted the development of some diseases, particularly high blood pressure and, less predictably, cancer. Interacting with people in tense situations was proven to be more likely to trigger coronary diseases, but no differences were found in terms of cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks or asthma.
For the researchers, this may explain why Spanish and Italian people, known for their hot blooded reactions, live on average two years longer than the British people, who are more widely known for their calm nature. This correlation is seen as a light explanation, since life expectancy isn’t just a matter of having a big mouth!
Other factors, such as food, also plays a major role, and obesity rates, which are the cause of many cardiovascular disorders, are much higher in Britain than mainland Europe.
Overall, introverted people don’t need to worry, if the slightest ordeal shakes you up, your return to security is much better experienced than those who stress about every situation.
