The 90’s generation will never forget the famous Nintendo Game Boy that filled most of their free time with lots of fun and enjoyment. I remember my feeling when I finally won the “Super Mario” game and watch the ending video was absolutely stunning.
Nintendo’s Game Boy was in fact one of the most popular consoles during the 1990’s. Nowadays, and even with the emergence of smartphones, it still has a hardcore fanbase, and Nintendo wants to take them on a journey back in time with a new two-in-one device. That’s why Nintendo filed a US patent for a Game Boy-style phone case in March 2018. This case is capable of turning a smartphone’s touchscreen into a functioning Game Boy with a working control pad and buttons .
As show the figures below, the new phone case would open like a book, and has a front cover that serves as the face of the device. It also has a rectangular section where the touchscreen of the phone appears. When opened, the phone can be used normally, but once the case is closed, the view is limited to the classic Game Boy screen, and the buttons become usable with the touch screen .
This case features the A, B, “Start” and “Select” buttons, as well as a directional pad, just like the original console that we are all accustomed to. Once commercialised, the case could make us relive the wonderful experience and nostalgia of playing a Game Boy once again, while protecting the phone from accidental damage and scratches. It’s important to remember lots of patents still never see the light of day, which makes it uncertain if we will ever actually see this wonderful phone case on the market.
Nintendo does not offer any Game Boy software for Android or iOS devices to date, but this innovative case could mean that Nintendo’s “retrogaming” is on the way, especially given Nintendo has constantly refused to adapt their games to smartphones. Well, prepare yourself Game Boy fans (including me), because the childhood could very well start again!
