In March 2000, the Lisbon European Council set the goal of becoming "the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010. The objective: 3% of GDP in R&D investment by 2010.
The UK has taken significant steps towards increasing the quantity and quality of Research and Development over the last decade. A number of programmes both at national and European level have been implemented for promoting investment in R&D with the aim of increasing R&D expenditure and sustaining the UK’s competitiveness. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE UK
Many funding grants are available for UK businesses at both national and European level. The Technology Strategy Board has been designated the main public body for R&D funding in the UK on a national level. At European level, many funding grants are available for UK businesses: FP7, Eurêka!, Eurostars, and CIP.
