Get the Credit Your R&D Deserves

Media: Enterprise Ireland's Technology Ireland Magazine
Published: January 2012

Introduction:

Despite an increased awareness of the R&D Tax Credit among Irish companies, many still fail to claim their full and proper entitlement under what is potentially, a very valuable scheme. With the changes recently announced as part of Budget 2012, the value of the scheme to companies is set to be enhanced further. Some companies are unaware of the wide range of activities that can qualify for the tax credit and lose out. Other companies fail to properly assess the eligibility of their R&D activities, to identify the correct start/end dates of qualifying R&D activities or to maintain proper supporting documentation and leave themselves open to adjustments further down the line.

"Much has been made in recent times of the resilience being shown by the food and drink sector during the economic downturn. The reasons put forward for these impressive results are as wide and varied as the companies that operate within the sector. One contributing factor that has become increasingly evident is the level of innovation being carried out in the sector...."

Credit worthy? Getting funding for your R&D

Media - The Engineers Journal
Volume 65: Issue 4 July/August 2011

Extract:
"If there is one issue above all others that has impacted companies in Ireland in recent years it is funding, or more to the point, the lack of it. Internal competition within companies for limited resources has, at times, become almost as fi erce as that which exists when products and services make it to market. Unfortunately, it can be engineering departments that are hardest hit by cutbacks, be it layoffs or reduced budgets. Given that the engineering department is often the source of the inspired thinking that leads to new and improved products and processes, this has been a most unwelcome consequence of the economic downturn..."

Winter Edition, December 2009

"...Companies are truly feeling the impact of the recession with many finding cutting costs and identifying substantial savings a key challenge for 2010”, says Tanguy Morel, Director with Leyton...

...According to Morel, telecommunications is a key area where companies can introduce significant savings. “Companies should consider whether or not their telecoms estate is being maximised effectively”, he advises. “More and more companies should be comparing prices with other suppliers, switching where appropriate, and renegotiating for better prices with their current providers...."

Magazine Survey – Taxing Matters

Media: Business Plus Magazine
November 2009

Extract:
“...In the past, many qualifying companies neglected to claim valuable R&D tax credits to which they were entitled. The recession combined with the introduction of a cash payment incentive has brought increased interest to claiming...However, the benefit is somewhat watered down by its protracted instalment mechanism. It is clear that there is still room for improvement to make it more attractive for companies to claim”...

...“A claim for an R&D tax credit is typically a high detailed body of information and this year, the manner in which claims are dealt with has been challenging. In mid-November 2008, the budget recommendations shortened the timeframe within which R&D tax credit claims must be made from four retrospective years to 12 months”....

Magazine Article – How to improve the R&D Tax Incentive

Media: Business Plus Magazine
November 2009

Extract:
“...Finance Minister Brian Lenihan should use the upcoming budget to plug the gaps in what could be an exceptionally attractive body of clever taxed based legislation which will have long-term value for the country”...

...“Last year the French Government introduced s ‘recession buster’ payable tax credit (...). Mr Lenihan should follow this lead and introduce a full lump sum refund of the payable tax credit...(...)...The Minster should consider abolishing the base year rule entirely so as to generate an immediate and material economic stimulus for a larger number of high value employers. (...). Curently a company making a claim in respect of qualifying R&D expenditure must submit the relevant application to the Revenue Commissioners within 12 months of their accounting period. Such a constraint is proving to be administratively difficult for many of our clients....An extension of the existing 12 months to 24 months would provide assistance to laimants to plan and put in place the administrative processes required to submit a complete and correct application....”
